The Rally Changed My Short-Term View
Bitcoin jumped roughly 7% today. MSTR, the equity market's favorite Bitcoin amplifier, gained about 13%.
That is not background noise. It changes my short-term view.
I was leaning cautious on crypto into this week. After today's move and the completed ETF data, I am moving to a bullish tilt. But I am not calling this the start of a clean new trend yet. One violent green candle can be real buying, a short squeeze, an event trade, or all three wearing the same coat.

Washington Lit the Match
The obvious spark was Washington. Trump was expected to meet crypto and prediction-market executives alongside the SEC and CFTC chairs at the White House. That is exactly the kind of setup crypto loves: political attention, regulatory optimism, and enough uncertainty for traders to fill in the blanks themselves.
The meeting is meaningful, but a meeting is not legislation, and enthusiasm is not implementation. The policy headline can explain why attention arrived. It cannot by itself establish whether the demand will persist after the event.
ETF Flows Started to Confirm It
The ETF story is stronger than it first looked.
United States spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in serious money during the first week of August, then gave back roughly $461 million from August 10 through August 14. The reversal was not the tentative $25 million initially reported by an incomplete data snapshot. Final issuer-level figures show about $297.5 million of net inflows on August 17 and another $189.3 million on August 18. That is roughly $486.8 million across two sessions, led mainly by BlackRock's IBIT and Fidelity's FBTC.
That matters. I can no longer describe the ETF tape as merely mixed or unconfirmed. Two strong sessions are real confirmation. They are not yet proof of a durable wave, though. I still want to see whether buyers stay after the political headline fades and whether Bitcoin can hold the breakout when the tape gets less friendly.
So my read is simple: the rally has its first real confirmation; now it owes us follow-through.

Evidence worth keeping in view
The main observations remain separate so one strong item cannot silently stand in for the whole case.

Through August 26, my base case is high-level consolidation with a slight upward bias. The $66,000-$69,000 area is now the zone that matters to me. Holding near today's breakout would be constructive. Giving the whole…

Through August 26, my base case is high-level consolidation with a slight upward bias. The $66,000-$69,000 area is now the zone that matters to me. Holding near today's breakout would be constructive. Giving the whole move back would expose how much of it was headline fuel.
The more dangerous window is August 27 through September 1. I expect much larger two-way movement there. After today's squeeze, that could arrive as one more push higher followed by a hard shakeout, rather than a neat decline on schedule. Crypto rarely gives anyone the clean version.
What Would Confirm a Stronger Trend
I would upgrade this into a stronger trend view only if several kinds of evidence begin agreeing instead of leaving the entire case to one price candle.
Confirmation dashboard
- Bitcoin holds above the breakout area for more than one session.
- Spot ETF inflows persist for several consecutive trading days.
- The move remains spot-led instead of being carried by exploding leverage and funding rates.
- Bitcoin stays firm even if equities wobble or macro liquidity tightens.
What Would Make It a Failed Event Rally
I would treat it as a failed event rally if the White House meeting produces no concrete policy path, ETF outflows resume, and Bitcoin falls back through roughly $65,000-$66,000. Trump-related crypto announcements have produced short-lived surges before. The market remembers the headline much faster than it reads the fine print.
For now, I trust Bitcoin more than the proxies, and the proxies more than a random altcoin stampede. The farther an asset sits from actual spot demand, the more today's excitement can turn into tomorrow's air pocket.
Good rally. Better tape. The first proof is here. Now show me it can last.
Source and Publication Note
This Free edition mirrors the Perchery article published on Substack on August 19, 2026. The original Perchery content ID, publication timestamp, public Substack URL, and X and Bluesky distribution URLs are preserved in the shared editorial record.
The price changes and ETF-flow figures reflect the source article's stated publication window and can become stale quickly. The policy catalyst was documented through Bloomberg Law reporting, final issuer-level flow figures through Farside Investors and TFTC, and the prior short-lived policy surge through Associated Press reporting. The August 17 figure was corrected after the completed daily record replaced an incomplete provisional snapshot.
This is a conditional market view, not a claim that one event or one session establishes a durable cryptocurrency trend.
