The Rotation Arrived. I Think This Leg Is Done.

Bitcoin led, Ether confirmed, and Solana printed above $100. Now gold offers a cross-asset check as the macro calendar becomes less friendly.

The part the headline misses

Bitcoin led, Ether confirmed, and Solana arrived last above $100. By early August 23, the same order appeared in reverse and the late leader had given back the most.

The next market question is no longer whether demand arrived. It is whether real ETF demand can keep overcoming supply as the August 26 data and NVIDIA earnings open a heavier cross-asset window.

The full note shows the rotation sequence, the $2.6 billion flow backdrop, four dated windows, gold's role as a cross-check, and the conditions that would overturn this view.

The Call

My read is that the clean part of this crypto leg is probably behind us. Through September 16, my base path is cooling first, a wider repricing window from August 27 through September 1, a possible repair during September 2-8, then a second and potentially harder test from September 9-16.

Confidence is medium. The rotation completed, but real spot demand remains too strong for me to call the entire cycle over. A stronger path would require Bitcoin to hold its upper range, Ether to reclaim $2,500, and Solana to turn $95-$100 into support after the August 26 macro data and NVIDIA earnings.

This week produced a flood of explanations. I kept three: the order of the move, the quality of the money behind it, and the calendar waiting on the other side.

Section 02

The Rotation Completed in Order

Two days before publication, I wrote down the last combination I wanted to see: Bitcoin holding around $75,000-$80,000, Ether pushing toward $2,500-$2,600, and Solana finally reaching $95-$100. The market nearly printed the whole sequence line by line.

Coinbase spot data show Bitcoin moving from a low near $62,679 on August 17 to $79,500 on August 21. Ether followed from roughly $1,870 to $2,548. Solana arrived last and briefly touched $102.70 on August 22.

The leader broke out, the second leader caught up, and then the higher-beta major printed the round-number move everyone had been waiting for. Once all three happen in order, the easy information has usually been harvested.

Fig. 2 -- The first unwind preserved the same ordering: the last major asset to catch up also gave back the most.
Section 03

The Last Asset Gave Back the Most

The first unwind arrived in the same order, only faster at the edge. In early August 23 trading, Bitcoin was near $76,834, about 3.4% below its high. Ether was near $2,410, down roughly 5.4%. Solana had slipped to $93.39, about 9.1% below $102.70.

That does not establish a larger reversal. It does say that late catch-up is not fresh evidence merely because it is dramatic. I would rather miss the final vertical candle than confuse late beta with a new beginning.

The Money Was Real. The Follow-Through Is the Question.

US spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs attracted about $2.6 billion during the week, their strongest combined inflow since October 2025. Bitcoin products accounted for roughly $1.9 billion and Ether funds about $697 million. This was not an empty move floating on thin participation.

That flow is the main reason the cautious version needs discipline. A mature rally can consolidate and continue if spot demand keeps absorbing supply. The stronger path would now look almost boring: Bitcoin holds its upper range, Ether recovers $2,500, Solana turns $95-$100 into support, and participation broadens without leverage becoming disorderly.

The number I care about next is not another inflow headline. It is the market's response to continued inflows. If fresh spot demand arrives and prices still cannot recover the highs, existing supply is absorbing good news. That would say more about exhaustion than one red candle ever could.

Section 05

Wednesday Gives the Window a Mechanism

My existing timing map treats August 23-26 as the quieter setup and August 27 through September 1 as the first major repricing window. The date is not magic. The mechanism arrives on August 26.

The BEA calendar puts second-quarter GDP revisions, corporate profits, personal income, spending, and inflation data on the same morning. NVIDIA reports after the close. Together they can move rates, the dollar, AI risk appetite, and the marginal appetite for crypto.

Crypto trades through the weekend, so it may show the stress before equities do. The first shock does not have to finish the job: September 2-8 remains the repair window, and the lower-confidence but more important second test arrives September 9-16.

Section 06

Gold Is the Cross-Check

GLD gained almost 2% on Friday while the late crypto rotation began to unwind. One session is not confirmation, but it gives me a useful second market to watch.

Crypto and gold can both benefit from easier financial conditions, but they behave differently when the source of stress changes. Crypto still needs liquidity and risk appetite. Gold has a better chance to hold when real yields stop rising, the dollar softens, or fiscal, energy, and policy risk become harder to ignore. It can still get sold first if everyone suddenly needs cash.

WindowWhat I am watching
August 23-26Choppy to firm, but not yet a clean breakout case
August 27-September 1Volatility first; the recovery from any liquidity dip matters more
September 2-8Digestion or repair rather than a straight-line advance
September 9-16The main relative-strength test between gold and risk assets
Section 07

What Confirms the Cross-Asset Path

The cautious path becomes more credible only when several independent observations begin agreeing.

Confirmation board

  • Bitcoin loses $75,000 after the August 26 catalysts and struggles to recover it.
  • Ether repeatedly fails near $2,500 while Solana remains below $95.
  • ETF inflows slow, or continued inflows stop producing higher prices.
  • Real yields or the dollar rise while semiconductor and crypto breadth weaken together.
  • Gold absorbs the first shock and begins outperforming crypto and equity beta.
Section 08

What Proves It Wrong

The view is not protected from the evidence. If the conditions below arrive first, the completed rotation was more likely a higher platform than an ending.

Invalidation conditions

  • Bitcoin holds or quickly reclaims the $75,000-$80,000 range.
  • Ether recovers $2,500 while its ETF inflows persist.
  • Solana turns $95-$100 into support after its first trip above $100.
  • Broader participation improves without a sharp jump in leverage and funding.
  • The late-August macro window passes with lower yields, calm credit, and healthy equity breadth.
  • Gold loses relative strength through September 16 as the dollar and real yields rise together.
Section 09

The Scorecard Is Fixed

I will return on September 17 and score five things without rewriting the original call: whether cooling arrived by September 1, whether September 2-8 produced a repair, whether September 9-16 delivered a second test, whether gold showed relative strength, and whether any invalidation condition fired first.

For now, the read is simple: Bitcoin led, Ether confirmed, Solana delivered the late chase, and the calendar is getting heavier. The burden of proof has shifted back to the bullish path. Gold is the cross-check.
